Umbilical cord adherent to the fetal hand

Case report

A 26-year-old woman, G1 P0 was presented to our center at 24 weeks of gestation for a routine ultrasound examination. The woman had no family history of congenital anomalies and had not taken any medication during her pregnancy. Ultrasound examinations at the 12 and 19 weeks were normal.

Our ultrasound examination revealed an intrauterine fetal demise. Fetal size corresponded to 20 weeks of gestation. The ultrasound showed a knot of the umbilical cord.  We assumed that this was a cause of the fetal demise.

After the pregnancy termination and clinical examination of the fetus, we found out that there was no true knot of the cord. The umbilical cord was ingrown to the left hand of the fetus.
