Case report

A 22 year-old woman, with unremarkable family and environmental history, presented at 22 weeks of pregnancy. Our ultrasound examination revealed a cystic structure within the right upper abdomen. At 25 weeks the structure had the same size (11x6 mm). The structure communicated via a duct with the gallbladder and that is why the diagnosis of the choledochal cyst was proposed. The size of the cyst stayed the same during pregnancy (measured at 27th and 32nd week).

At 35th week an MRI was done, but the cyst wasn"t found.

The above findings led us to the diagnosis of the transient choledochal cyst.

The healthy neonate was born at 38 weeks (3000 g, Apgar 10, 10, 10).

Images 1, 2: 22 weeks of pregnancy; gray scale (Image 1) and color Doppler (image 2) scans. Images show transverse scans through the fetal upper abdomen with a choledochal cyst (K). Color Doppler shows the avascular nature of the formation.

Images 5, 6: 22 weeks of pregnancy; color Doppler (image 5) and gray scale (Image 6) scans. Image 5 shows transverse upper abdominal view - the left side of the image shows the choledochal cyst and the right side of the image shows the communication of the cyst and the gallbladder. Image 6 shows the communication of the gallbladder and the choledochal cyst in more detailed view.
