Case report

Following images and videos show a case of umbilical vein varix seen at 23 weeks of gestational age in an uncomplicated pregnancy.
The 2D and Doppler color images illustrate a dilation of the intra-abdominal portion of the umbilical vein.

The significance of this finding remains controversial, and it has been associated with an unexplained high mortality rate in utero due to thrombosis and associated chromosomal abnormalities. Recent publications conclude that the outcome of fetuses with intra-abdominal vein varix is generally favorable.Despite that this finding  should prompt the search for other anomalies, especially markers of aneuploidy and serial sonographic evaluation of the fetus is recommended.
